Bleeding, swelling and pain are three of the most common side effects that occur after dental surgery. Finding ways to manage the pain without exceeding your prescribed medication dosage can be frustrating. Fortunately, there are several things that you can try, right from home, that can help manage these symptoms while you are waiting to take your medication. Even better, these simple ingredients are common in most households.
Bleeding gums is very normal after you undergo dental surgery. In most cases, the bleeding will stop within a few days after the surgery. However, while you are waiting on that, you can sip on black tea. This is because black tea is full of tannic acid. Tannic acid helps to remove the bacteria that is causing your gums to bleed and will also help fight off infection, helping the healing process along. If your gums begin to bleed, slowly sip on a cup of black tea. Once the tea is finished, you can also place the warm tea bag on your gums.
Cucumbers may seem like an odd remedy for swelling, however, cucumber juice helps to reduce the inflammation in your gums and will also reduce the throbbing pain. This remedy for gum swelling is easy, and you only need a few slices. Place one slice of cucumber on each side of your mouth, in between your gums and the cheeks. Leave them in place for about ten to fifteen minutes, giving the cucumber juice enough time to set into your gums. This method is safe enough to use throughout the day whenever your pain and swelling persists.
This method may not be as tasty as the other two, but garlic can prove to be much more useful. This common household ingredient is naturally anti-bacterial and will help fight off infections in your mouth. It can also lower pain the inflammation. Garlic is full of allicin, an oily liquid that kills off bad bacteria and cleans out your gums. This method is a little more time consuming than the others but will be well worth it in the end. Take three garlic cloves and crush it into two teaspoons of olive oil. Once the two ingredients are mixed completely, massage the oil into your gums and let it sit there for fifteen to twenty minutes. Garlic is also helpful to the healing process of your mouth because it improves your mouth blood flow, which, in turn, will reduce your swelling.
The symptoms associated with the recovery after dental surgery can be brutal on you. If you find that the pain and bleeding is unbearable before your next medication dosage, try one of the methods listed above. These ingredients will not only help with the pain and inflammation, but they are also quick and easy to use.
