2 Ways to Protect Your Child's Fractured Cusp Until They See a Dentist

Joe Lawrence

If your child experiences a fractured cusp, then it is important that they visit their dentist as soon as possible. A fractured cusp that is left untreated can eventually result in a number of dental issues. Until your child is able to visit their dentist, it is important to take the necessary steps to keep the fracture protected. This can be difficult to do if you are unsure of what to look for. Fortunately, there are a few ways that you can keep your child's fractured cusp from worsening before they have a chance to see a dentist.

Instruct Your Child to Constantly Wear a Mouthguard

Mouthguards are worn during high-impact sports in order to prevent against tooth fractures. However, they can also be worn after the fracture has been created in order to prevent the crack from worsening. A mouthguard will keep your child's teeth from rubbing against each other. Constant rubbing will eventually chip away at the chewing surface of your child's tooth. Since this is where the fracture is located this will cause an even longer crack. The mouthguard can also be used to eat. Chewing is one of the main activities that can cause your fracture to worsen. This happens because your bottom and top teeth come in contact with each other repeatedly. It creates a softer surface and makes it easier to chew without aggravating the fracture.

Give Your Child a Relaxant Tea Before Bed

If your child struggles with tooth grinding, then this can actually make their fractured cusp worse. The force that is applied to the crack as they grind their teeth will cause the crack to expand.

An easy way to prevent this is by giving your child a relaxant tea to drink before going to bed. The tea will help to relax your child and keep them from grinding their teeth while they sleep. Eucalyptus and lavender are both herbs that you should use when creating a natural relaxing tea for your child since they contain analgesic properties. Simply steep the herbs in hot water for several minutes. Add a bit of honey and give it to your child to drink.

A fractured cusp is usually one of the more minor tooth cracks. Your dentist should be able to solve the issue quickly as long as the crack does not become bigger. Therefore, use these tips to prevent that from happening. For further instruction or assistance, contact clinics like Apollo Dental Center.
